Portraits of Famous Philatelists from 'The Philatelic Record', 1879-1914
19th century's greatest journal
This article was first published as “Portraits of Famous Philatelists from The Philatelic Record, 1879-1914.” Philatelic Literature Review 70 no. 2 (Second Quarter 2021)
Researchers of philatelic history are invariably interested in the associated personalities – collectors, dealers, journalists, auctioneers, and the like. They also prefer to get contemporary photographs of such people for illustrating their research works. Given that photography was not ubiquitous during the lifetimes of the first and even the second generation of philatelists, it is not always easy to find them especially for those considered one notch below philately’s hallowed forefathers!

While preparing for offline and online presentations on early Indian dealers and philatelists in recent times, I frequently referred to The Philatelic Record1 (Figure 1) apart from Indian journals of course. Sometime back, I came across Brian Birch’s article on biographies of famous philatelists as published in The Stamp Collectors’ Fortnightly2 between 1900 and 1915 (Birch 2001). Hence, I thought it may be worthwhile to compile the biographies in the Record in a similar fashion.
Since its very beginning in 1879, the Record used to supply, at the end of every year, one photograph of an eminent personality of that golden age; this served as the frontispiece of the yearly volumes. In the years 1897, 1899, and 1900 the journal published 11 interviews of famous philatelists. Finally, in the latter year, and with a change in the publisher to Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, the Record started a series called “Notable Philatelists” which continued until 1906. The series invariably contained a full-page photograph of its subject along with one to three pages of write-up.3 With yet another change in its ownership to William Lewis & Son, the series was abandoned.
The 19th Century’s Greatest Journal
There are many reasons for choosing the Record as the subject of this article.
First, it is a journal of the highest class which emerged fortuitously and filled the void caused by the demise of two of the best of that period – The Stamp Collector’s Magazine (1863-1874) and The Philatelist (1866-1876). The great Edward L. Pemberton’s The Philatelical Journal also found its end in this period, seeing just 16 issues between 1872 and 1875 owing to his indifferent health. Upon his death on 12 December 1878, his business as taken over by Alexander Henry Wilson and styled as Pemberton, Wilson, & Co. Almost immediately, in February 1879, the first issue of The Philatelic Record came out.
The magazine grew from its “modest endeavours” (Figure 2) to become, as Amrhein (1992 p. 70) says, “the nineteenth century’s greatest journal.” Smith (1917, p. 3) is of the opinion that, “…no periodical has ever been edited with a truer devotion to the best interests of stamp-collecting or with a higher standard of literary and philatelic record.”4 The latter part of the statement rings true when one considers the Record’s editors; they were some of the most brilliant philatelists of all time: Maitland Burnett (Figure 3), W. A. S. Westoby, Edward B. Evans, Marcellus P. Castle, Edward. J. Nankivell, W. Dorning Beckton, and L. W. Fulcher.5

Next, it is the only journal to have had a continuous run from the incunabula6 period right to the beginnings of World War I, an almost 36-year journey which spanned two generations of the hobby.7

Further, it is most often the only source of photographs of philatelists of that age (Figure 4) and the photos add a helpful context to their research, collections, and exhibits.
Last, but not the least, given the expiration of copyright, most of the Record’s issues are freely available on the internet to download.8 Thus, readers do not necessarily need in-person access to a philatelic library.
Index of Philatelic Personalities
Personalities covered in this article are organized alphabetically. “The Fathers of Philately” whose names are inscribed posthumously on the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists (RDP), have been identified with a ‘‡’ symbol. Later signatories to the Roll are marked with a ‘†’; readers are strongly recommended to Birch (2019) and Butler (1990) for more information on these individuals. Wherever possible, birth and death years of each philatelist have been added so that readers can place their biography in the proper context of time. Nationalities9 have been included. If there is an accompanying photograph, that is indicated as well. Since obituaries can be a rich source of information, however grotesque it may sound, they are an unwitting addition; such obituaries have only been included if they are judged to contain a reasonable amount of additional information.

The magazine was called The Philatelic Record from Vol. 1 (February 1879) to Vol. 17 (December 1895). Thereafter it amalgamated with Theodor Buhl and Co.’s Stamp News and was renamed as The Philatelic Record and Stamp News from Vol. 18 (January 1896) to Vol. 21 (December 1899). Subsequently it went back to its original name from Vol. 22 (January 1900) to Vol. 36 (December 1914).
The title of this article is misleading in its scope since Birch additionally covers bibliographies of biographies i.e., separate works (but not journals) where biographies of philatelists may be found.
Unfortunately, and perhaps due to the language barrier, biographies of personalities from Europe are not as detailed as they should be.
To be sure, Smith (1917 p. 1) implied this only for the first 17 volumes of the journal (1879-1895) since with the 18th volume, “…a new editorship brought about a radical change in the whole spirit of the publication.”
The tenure of the editors of the Record were as follows:
A. H. Wilson: Vol. 1 (February 1879)
Maitland Burnett: Vol. 1 (March 1879) to Vol. 7 (November 1885) (excepting a few issues which were edited by E. B. Evans)
W. A. S. Westoby: Vol. 7 (December 1885) to Vol. 12 (June 1890) and Vol. 14 (January 1892) to Vol. 17 (December 1895) (See p. 169 and 185 of Vol. 7)
Edward B. Evans: Vol. 12 (July 1890) to Vol. 12 (December 1890) (Evans started editing Stanley, Gibbons, and Co.’s Monthly Journal from September 1890 onwards)
Marcellus P. Castle: Vol. 13 (January 1891) to Vol. 13 (December 1891) (Castle departed to edit the newly launched The London Philatelist, journal of The Philatelic Society, London from January 1892 onwards; with the launch of the new journal, the symbiotic relationship between the Record and the Society going back to 1879 ended)
Edward. J. Nankivell: Vol. 18 (January 1896) to Vol. 20 (December 1898) and Vol. 21 (July 1899) to Vol. 23 (September 1901)
Theodor Buhl: Vol. 21 (January 1899) to Vol. 21 (June 1899)
W. Dorning Beckton: Vol. 23 (October 1901) to Vol. 30 (December 1908)
L. W. Fulcher: Vol. 31 (January 1909) to Vol. 36 (December 1914)
Amrhein (1992, p. 9) defines the incunabula period of philately as being between 1861 and 1879.
The other magazine to vie for this honour would be Alfred Smith & Co.’s Monthly Circular which, including in its various avatars, ran from January 1875 to August 1922. However, it seldom contained original articles. News of new issues and the publisher’s own and third-party advertisements occupied the majority of space.
See for example, Smithsonian Libraries at library.si.edu/digital-library/book/philatelic-record. The issues are also available in the Crawford Collection at the British Library accessible online through globalphilateliclibrary.org; however, since the books were microfilmed, the photographs are usually not clear.
In case of philatelists whose nationalities was Great Britain but who lived for any length of time in India, I have marked them as Indian as well.
I would not have known this fact if it were not for a small slip inserted next to Duke of York’s photograph. This slip says, Owing to the much lamented death of the Earl of Kingston, whose photograph we had hoped to issue as a frontispiece to Vol. XVII of the “P. R,” we regret that the December number has been somewhat delayed. We will, however, present the portrait of another eminent philatelist to the Subscribers to Vol. XVII. Of the “Philatelic Record.”
